Toowoomba Annual Teams’ Chess Competition
St Joseph’s College Chess team earned some well-deserved success at the Chess tournament earlier this month. We had eight players competing in both the junior and the senior divisions of the Toowoomba District Secondary Schools’ Group Chess Championships. Despite the cold, the students were in fine spirits. Battling their skill and their wits against students from eleven schools in the district, seventeen teams played six games each over the weekend tournament.
We also welcomed some new players to the Teams competition for 2018 - Jacob and Jamie Westerhout - who played confidently throughout the weekend. Our students showed collegial support for one another, celebrated the wins and
commiserated the losses. At the end of the competition, our Senior team placed second. The College should be proud of the efforts by all players and, for the third year in a row, our Senior team will be representing the district at the State Finals later this year, held in Brisbane.
Any students interested in joining the College club, come along to one of our Tuesday lunch time sessions in the library each week. New members are very welcome. Interschool chess is a great medium to foster good relations with other students and promotes co-operation and team spirit. We warmly urge you to take up the opportunity to represent your school with pride and to play the “greatest board game in the world.”
